Transfer ban? No problem as Chelsea reportedly plan huge £200 million spending spree in January

Chelsea are set to spend big in January to avoid losing out on targets if FIFA go ahead with a reported threat to ban the Blues in the summer.

The Blues are facing a possible two-year ban by FIFA after the world football governing body received reports of a breach by Chelsea in their recent transfer dealings according to the Times. Should the ban be placed on the Stamford Bridge club, Chelsea would be unable to sign players for two transfer windows.

But Roman Abramovich has given his influential negotiators the power to spend £200 million on new players. The Express say Chelsea are targeting three new defenders to beef up Maurizio Sarri’s backline including Napoli’s Elseid Hysaj, Juventus left-full back Alex Sandro and former Blues central defender Nathan Ake. Ake has a £40 million buy-back option in his deal that took him to the Vitality stadium.

The former two would cost Chelsea at least £100 million. The report also says Chelsea would attempt to pay out a top fee for Borussia Dortmund star Christian Pulisic, who would alone command a similar fee.

The report, although tantalising for Chelsea fans, makes little sense when recent transfer dealings are taken into consideration. Despite spending wads of cash on new players when Roman Abramovich arrived at the club in 2003, the Blues have slowed down on their expenditure. However, their latest signings, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Jorginho have proven they can still spend when the situation is dire.

But you wouldn’t call Chelsea’s form and position in the various competitions dire. Not at the moment.
