Chelsea are in reportedly in talks to sign Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels in January with Maurizio Sarri concerned by the void to be created in his squad if Gary Cahill leaves.
Cahill is expected to depart the club in January after growing frustrated by the lack of game time under new manager Sarri. Reports in Italy say Cahill is on the radar of AC Milan as captured by Calciomercato. Should he leave, the Blues will be short of defenders in the central area and may have to strengthen to compete for the remainder of the season.
According to Bild in Germany, Hummels is also frustrated after falling down in the pecking order behind Jerome Boateng and Niklas Sule. According to the report, he may ask to leave in the New Year and now Chelsea are seeking to be the club that signs him up as per Metro Sport.
It’s difficult to imagine Hummels in a Chelsea shirt though with Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz firmly holding down the two spots in Sarri’s four-man backline.
