“It’s clear we didn’t lose for the way of playing” – Maurizio Sarri defends his style

Chelsea lost to Leicester City on Saturday because the Blues stars reacted wrongly to the goal and also had bad luck in front of the onion bag, and that’s according to head coach Maurizio Sarri.

The Blues manager says after his side went down early in the second half, thanks to Jamie Vardy’s fine finish from just inside the 18-yard area, the highly paid Chelsea players failed to respond well enough and launch a comeback. Several chances were wasted by the front line and even Marcos Alonso had the opportunity in the dying moments of the game to grab a point,  but ultimately failed after hitting the post.

Eden Hazard struck the post as well in the first half before finding Kasper Schmeichel twice with other attempts at goal.

Sarri says luck was not on the side of this side last weekend while the mentality of his players was not strong enough to warrant a comeback but admits the club may need to hire a full-time psychologist to help them secure wins in the coming months.

“No, Not at the moment, because it’s not easy. I had a sports psychologist 15 years ago. In Italy it was really very difficult because the clubs were not ready in that moment, but I think they are not ready also in this moment. [That was] my experience in Italy. I don’t know [what it’s like] here. We can talk about this [with the club]. Why not?

It’s clear we didn’t lose for the way of playing. We were a bit unlucky and then we lost because the reaction after the goal was in the wrong direction, I think. We had only to continue [playing the same way]. We were in full control of the match. We were dangerous without conceding anything to the opponents, so we had only to continue.”
