Chelsea will be in for a busy transfer period once the winter window is opened officially in a few days and the rumors about Gonzalo Higuain have been rife in Italy.
In truth, Chelsea need the striker to fix their goal-scoring woes in recent weeks. Alvaro Morata, who is expected to go in the opposite direction to AC Milan should Higuain arrive in London, and Olivier Giroud have performed below expectations this season and the Blues stand a risk of losing out on major trophies if a remedy is not found.
However, according to a report by Football London, Maurizio Sarri has told his superiors to find him a new defensive midfielder to beef up his midfield as that is one of the areas that need addressing.
The Italian tactician admitted to needing reinforcements in defensive midfield in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Premier League encounter with Watford on Boxing Day.
“We have a lot of offensive midfielders and we have only [N’Golo] Kante as a defensive midfielder. So it’s not easy now for the midfield to have the right balance.”
