Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has jumped to the defence of midfielder Jorginho, who has been a scapegoat for many this season.
Jorginho is not the type of midfielder that Chelsea fans have warmed to, historically speaking. We’re used to having someone dynamic and combative in that role – he’s neither of those.
That’s not to say that he’s entirely at fault for our struggles this term, however, nor is he exempt from criticism. He has done as good as we anticipated for his first season in a new league.
Many aren’t so forgiving when it comes to Jorginho, but thankfully he has an influential member of the dressing room on his side – Cesar Azpilicueta.
Azpi is quoted by Goal defending Jorginho and thus suggesting that the criticism that he has received throughout the season to date has been unjust:
“Jorginho is a very important player for us. Sometimes all of us have struggled because when the results are not there, it means we are not doing the perfect job. But this is his first season in England, first time at a new club.”
“This [Frankfurt away] was an important game [for him]. He grew into the game by getting more control, creating more space for the two attacking midfielders where he could find them in very dangerous positions.”

Jorginho was the best player on the pitch on Thursday night, at a tough, hostile ground. He’s a warrior, which he often isn’t given credit for, and will only improve as he continues to adapt.
