Tonight’s Europa League final could prove to be a significant fixture in Maurizio Sarri’s managerial career, with Chelsea already preparing a contingency plan in case of his departure.
This information comes from the Daily Mail, who believe that Chelsea are prepared to push forward with the appointment of club legend Frank Lampard if Sarri walks out the door.
Lampard came agonisingly close to reaching the Premier League in his first season in management, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the playoff final on Monday afternoon.
What he lacks in experience, Chelsea appear to believe he makes up for in quality, with assistant manager Jody Morris also playing a part in the club’s desire to appoint him.
The Daily Mail claim that Lampard’s willingness to use the youth, accompanied with Morris’ past experience developing Chelsea’s youngsters, has put him in the driving seat to land the Chelsea job.
It’s also noted that there is a belief that Lampard’s appointment would help please the Chelsea supporters, who have continually chanted against Sarri throughout this season.
With the transfer ban still in force, it would come as no surprise if Chelsea opted for a manager like Lampard, rather than someone who is going to rely on Roman Abramovich’s chequebook.
Although, isn’t that what we were supposed to have in Sarri? A coach, who places more value on working with his players than looking to recruit from outside? Football isn’t as straightforward as it often seems.
