Chelsea were the biggest xG underperformers in the Premier League this season, which suggests good things could be on the horizon for us.
People often struggle to take xG seriously – usually because they have difficulties understanding what it is. When taken in consideration properly, it can be a clear indicator of what’s to come.
Have a look at this alternate Premier League table from the season just passed. If Chelsea and their rivals performed to what their xG expects, we would be in third with a 22 point cushion.

This suggests that we are able to create the same sort of chances that Manchester City and Liverpool have all season, but just don’t have the personnel to finish efficiently.
If we’re able to recruit them in the summer, should our transfer ban be suspended, you have to fancy our chances of being more competitive at the top of the table than this time around.
The only concern is losing Eden Hazard, who is one of the best creative outlets in the Premier League. We need to replace him, else the good things our xG suggests will be irrelevant.
