Chelsea set to accelerate talks to sign midfielder, can purchase him even with the ban

Chelsea are set to accelerate negotiations to purchase Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid following Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s injury, according to the Telegraph.

Kovacic, on-loan at Chelsea from Real Madrid until the season’s end, has been relatively underwhelming since joining the Blues back in the summertime.

He is clearly a talented player and the quality he showed in his youth remains, but he is virtually ineffective in the opposition’s final third.

When you have a player as incisive and effective as Ruben Loftus-Cheek also battling for minutes in that position, Kovacic is always going to be left out in the cold.

Even if the Croatia international isn’t guaranteed minutes at Chelsea, the club still appear keen to make the loan move permanent this coming summer.

The Telegraph believe that we are able to, despite the transfer ban, and are set to step up negotiations to sign him over the coming weeks.

Though Kovacic hasn’t set the world alight here, we’re stronger with him in the squad – and seeing as we can’t purchase anyone else – we might as well get him.
