Chelsea starter linked with major European move – but Chelsea may play hardball

Marcos Alonso has been linked with a move away from Chelsea.

The left back was today mentioned in The Sun as a target for Atletico Madrid as a player that could potentially replace departing left backs Lucas Hernandez and Filipe Luis.

He’s Spanish, from Madrid, and has the kind of dynamic athleticism that Diego Simeone will like down the left.

It’s a move that would probably make sense for all involved. Alonso gradually lost his place to Emerson over the course of last season, and while the Spaniard remains a fan favourite, if Maurizio Sarri is sticking around, he may well decide he can do better moving back to La Liga.

Chelsea might also want to cash in on a player whose value will only fall as they don’t play – but if we’re banned from transfers, can we really afford to get rid of even a squad players at this stage?

It seems very risky, even if Atletico make a very serious offer. So unless things change, expect to see us at least try and hang on to him.
