“He wanted to change the way we play” – Marcos Alonso reveals why he fell from grace to grass under Maurizio Sarri

Marcos Alonso had been one of the first names on the Chelsea teamsheets when he arrived at the club in the summer of 2017, but after a disastrous second year under Maurizio Sarri, the Spain left full-back has revealed he partly blames the manager’s decision to change the team’s style of play.

The defender had seen off competition from Abdul Baba Rahman and Emerson Palmieri in the early stages of this campaign before pressure from fans and his own poor form brought him down to the bench. He was used rather often in the Europa League with Palmieri preferred for the league matches.

Alonso’s goals dried up as fast as his ability to defend and soon it was the Chelsea fans calling for his exile from the team.

Alonso, when asked what contributed to his recent poor form pointed to Sarri’s tactical demands that were far apart from what Antonio Conte asked for in his maiden season in England and also cited injuries to his back.

“I started very well. Then the manager asked me for something different. I tried to do what he was asking me and maybe when the team started winning games again I had a small injury in my back.

Managers are different, they have different aspects of tactics. He wanted to change the way we play.”
