The figure desperate Derby County are set to offer Chelsea target Frank Lampard

Derby County are set to make a last ditch attempt to prevent Frank Lampard from leaving and becoming Chelsea manager, according to the Daily Star.

While we would deem it likely Lampard will be Chelsea manager come the start of next season, Derby are well within their rights to put up a fight.

The appointment of Lampard would not be a matter of the club doing an old friend a favour, he has demonstrated qualities which would be welcome here.

One of the most notable of those is his willingness to involve the young players, which could help bridge the gap between our academy and first-team – at last.

We ought to avoid getting ahead of ourselves, however, and instead focus on getting this deal over the line. Especially with Derby poised to put up a fight.

The Daily Star claim that the Rams are prepared to tear up Lampard’s current contract and offer him a £10M package in hope of convincing him to stay.

However, one would assume the pull of Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs on the planet and the one who holds Lampard’s heart, would be too strong, whatever the figure.

We may well know for certain, one way or the other, this coming week.
