England’s defence of the Toulon tournament may have come to an end last night, but Reece James did something which even Chelsea can’t ignore.
James was one of the best players in the Championship last season while out on-loan at Wigan Athletic. He proved that he was ready to be part of the Chelsea first-team squad.
He was entrusted to start at right-centre-back for England U20s against Portugal U20s on Tuesday night, a game which the Three Lions eventually lost 3-2.

We’d love to see him producing moments like this in a Chelsea shirt next season. There’s no longer any excuse for the club to overlook him.
He will benefit from the likely change of management, with Cesar Azpilicueta having no guarantees of a starting spot after a season below his usual standards.
