Chelsea youngster Ian Maatsen has revealed his belief that his debut against Bohemians is just the beginning, during an interview with Dutch outlet Voetbal International.
Maatsen was a surprise inclusion in Frank Lampard’s first starting lineup as Chelsea manager, so the 17-year-old must have wasted no time making an impression during pre-season training.
The Dutchman did not look an inch out of his depth playing alongside several already established senior Chelsea players, which bodes well for his career with the Blues going forward.
The game in Dublin marked the start of what Maatsen will hope is a successful career at Chelsea. He has revealed himself that he believes this is just the beginning for him.
He’s quoted by Voetbal international (quotes translated by WAGNH) saying:
“I had to be myself, just do my thing and I did that. I tried to play uninhibited, made attacking moves, stood my ground defensively. It went well with the support of my teammates.”
“The manager is very relaxed, but knows very well what and how he wants it. He explains everything and when you talk to him, you can already feel that you can learn a lot from him. Then he will participate during the position game and he will immediately be one of the better players.”
“But I am not satisfied, because this must be just the beginning. I am seventeen years old. What I am experiencing and learning now is priceless. The only thing I can do is train hard and believe in myself. Then everything should be fine.”
“This debut feels like a start.”
He sounds as though he’s got his head screwed on straight, which is more than can be said for most 17-year-olds. If he stays on the right path, a future place in the first-team could be on the cards.
