Chelsea academy product makes debut for the Blues against Sheffield United

Chelsea academy product Billy Gilmour made his first appearance for the Blues during our 2-2 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon.

Gilmour was involved in our pre-season campaign in the early stages of Frank Lampard’s time as Chelsea manager, and he was a bright spark in the centre of the park.

He was later included among the substitutes for our UEFA Super Cup clash with Liverpool, although he was never given the opportunity to enter the field of play.

Today, against Sheffield United, he did. As Mateo Kovacic hobbled towards the end of the contest, Lampard threw the 18-year-old into the action as a substitute.

Regardless of whether you believe it was the right decision to bring him on opposed to a senior alternative, we have to celebrate our younger players being given these opportunities.

Frank Lampard’s faith in our academy products appears to be unshakeable, which is just excellent.
