Out-on-loan Chelsea midfielder suffers torn ankle ligaments after nightclub attack

Danny Drinkwater was attacked by a group of six thugs outside a Manchester nightclub after making advances on a Scunthorpe United player’s girlfriend, report The Sun.

Drinkwater, a former Premier League champion, has been the main contributor to the downfall of his career in recent seasons. He decided to stick around at Chelsea and collect his paycheque with no prospect of being granted first-team minutes.

This summer Drinkwater finally decided it was time to jump ship, with Burnley offering him the opportunity to continue playing Premier League football. Unfortunately, he appears intent on ruining it for himself – once again.

The Sun report that Drinkwater was making blatant advances on the girlfriend of Scunthorpe United’s Kgosi Ntlhe, which were evidently not appreciated. A group of six attacked him and attempted to ‘break his legs’ by stamping on them.

The report notes that Drinkwater suffered torn ankle ligaments in the attack, as well as ‘black eye, severely swollen forehead, bruised shoulders and arms, and cut cheek.’ It looks as though it was pretty brutal, with Drinkwater in pretty bad shape.

While there’s no justification for a group of six attacking Drinkwater in this manner, he does appear to have put himself in the situation while out drinking. He has completely lost the concept of being a professional, and may face the consequences.
