Willian contract stalemate goes on and foreign clubs can offer contracts in 7 weeks

We’re into the second quarter of the season now, and Willian’s influence on this Chelsea team is only growing.

He’s really established himself as a full time starter for Frank Lampard, and over the last few games put in some brilliant performances.

Yet his contract remains unsigned. The Athletic go into some interest detail on the Brazilian and his ongoing stalemate with the club over a new deal.

Willian is 31 and the club only want to offer one year deals to players of that age. The player won’t settle for less than two. The Blues made an exception for David Luiz because of the transfer ban, but they aren’t likely to buckle again.

The piece takes in various views, before concluding that his performances between now and the summer will decide what his future is.

On the other hand, with his contract expiring in the summer, he can soon start speaking to foreign clubs. Do we really want to risk losing him on a free?
