Chelsea fans were very excited about Christian Pulisic’s arrival last summer, partly of course because he’s a talented young attacking player, but also in large part because he was the only signing we could make.
The transfer ban was in place and the Blues were only permitted to bring in the USA international because the deal was already agreed by all parties in January.
In the end, he had a slog getting into the team, a good spell once he’d made it, then a slump over Christmas before an injury that’s kept him out since.
The official Chelsea site today have a piece discussing how the winger felt his season had gone, and how frustrating his freak adductor injury was, just as he was breaking into the team:
“I think that a lot of people didn’t realise how serious it was. It was a really freak injury in how it happened. It happened in training out of nothing really and it put me out a while.”
There’s still not too much detail in there – it’s constantly been referred to as a “freak” injury by the club and player, but nobody is explaining exactly what is so freakish about it.
Who caused it? What happened? Certainly it was far more serious than was understood at the time – he was expected to be in the lineup one day and next thing we knew it had been a month without seeing him in action.
It was still a solid overall start to his Chelsea career, and we can’t wait to see him hit the ground running whenever the games restart.
