Dries Mertens top of Lampard’s list for possible budget summer

Chelsea will be losing two experienced wide attackers this summer when Pedro and Willian’s contracts expires, a move that will lower the squad’s average age even further.

It’s no wonder then that Frank Lampard seems to be looking for bodies in those positions, as well as players with a few more seasons under their belt. Dries Mertens of Napoli, also available on a free this summer, is a name that comes up again and again in this discussions.

HLN, as quoted by CaughtOffside, say that he is “top of Lampard’s list” for this summer, and given spending could be limited for many clubs by the coronavirus situation, we can see his free transfer being a very tempting move for the club.

There will certainly be no shortage of competition however, and the Blues will have to make a very generous offer to secure the attacker ahead of a long list of other interested parties.

He’s 33, but should have a year or two to shine left in him.
