“Desperate” decision to introduce Petr Cech assessed by former Chelsea player

Former Chelsea player Alan Hudson has criticised the decision to include Petr Cech in the Blues Premier League squad.

The club legend has been listed in the 25 man squad as an emergency alternative to Kepa Arrizabalaga, Edouard Mendy and Willy Caballero, and according Hudson this shows the terrible state the club are in at the back.

“He brought Cech in because of his vast experience and could not buy another ‘keeper.” the former defender explained.

“It goes to show just how desperate Frank is, and like if John Terry had been his assistant Frank would be putting him back in after all the calamity defending by their centre-backs.”

We’re not sure the two situations are really comparable. Firstly, a third choice goalkeeper is far less likely to play than even a fourth or fifth choice central defender. And even then, goalkeepers can likely play at a high level into their 40s, while outfield players usually struggle more once they’re into their 30s (just don’t tell Thiago Silva).

Still, he’s spot on in saying that it shows the sense of desperation around the position. Now Mendy has stacked up two clean sheets in a row things seem a lot more calm, but it certainly didn’t feel like that a week or two ago.
