“Azpilicueta was at the heart of the Chelsea team and the Chelsea family” – Top writer hails captain’s influence

Henry Winter is one of English football’s most respected writers, and he was of course in Porto last week to watch two English teams slug it out in the final.

This week he’s written an exclusive article for the club’s official website, where he picked out one particular character as influential – Cesar Azpilicueta.

The captain was brilliant in the game and was a key man in the celebrations afterwards too. Azpi’s interactions with his family

“What also became apparent was the sight of a team and club together, a unity of purpose encapsulated by Azpilicueta,” Winter wrote of the former Osasuna and Marseille man.

“He joined in Havertz’s post-match TV interview, his enthusiasm bubbling over. He talked to players’ families, making sure they were fine. He hugged and celebrated. Azpilicueta was at the heart of the Chelsea team and the Chelsea family,” Winter continued.

We’ve seen the same spirit from Azpi for almost ten years now, and all those who called him a bad captain before are having to really eat their words now.

He’s given everything for this club over the years, and now he has the ultimate reward. He was a fan favourite, and he’s quickly now becoming a club legend.
