“There was a big chance” – Tuchel thinks Tino Livramento misjudged decision to leave Chelsea

Chelsea come up against Southampton this weekend, including their most in form player, Tino Livramento.

The full back had been at Chelsea for his whole career until making a move this summer, and manager Thomas Tuchel was asked in his press conference today about the England youth international’s departure and how he felt about it.

Football.London had his full quotes on the whole scenario:

“Yes of course he was highly rated, we did everything to keep him here, to show him his future and his possibilities to compete also for a position in our team,” Tuchel said.

“He decided to go, that’s his decision, that’s one we have to accept with no hard feelings because we can show him the possibilities and then it’s on the player.

“He was of course competing with Reece James and Azpi on the right wing-back position, so I think it was an ideal position for him to fight.

“The group is not too big so there was a big chance also to make it all the way.”

Tuchel points to the fact that there were two established players in his position already – but he also believes that it was a good position to be battling for. Both James and Azpi can play centrally, and Azpi is coming to the end of his career in any case.

For now, Livramento is a Saint and there’s not much we can do. But we will be keeping a close eye on him, and the club will no doubt be ready to trigger their buy-back clause in the future should he continue to develop.
