Lewis Baker positive explains exactly why Chelsea didn’t add youth players for Wolves and Everton games

Chelsea had empty spaces on their bench for the games against Wolves and Everton last week after Covid struck down 7 members of the first team squad, leading some observers to ask why they hadn’t called up youth players to fill in.

Youngsters appeared in training yesterday though, and in his press conference today Thomas Tuchel all but confirmed that some of them would be used in the game tomorrow.

One who won’t be used it Lewis Baker, who has been playing for the Development Squad. He tested positive for Covid before joining training with the first team.

That is a perfect illustration of exactly why these youngsters weren’t added last week. If Tuchel had been in a rush, we could have added further positive nodes to a squad already struggling to contain an outbreak.

Let’s hope this means the rest of the youngsters were negative at least.

Poor Lewis though – he just can’t catch a break.
