The moment we were all dreading has arrived – Antonio Rudiger has confirmed his move to Real Madrid this summer.
A simultaneous announcement from the club and from the player has just dropped, with the club’s lengthy article in particular showing how much affecting had built up for the German defender as he emerged as a cult hero over the last two seasons.
It runs through his whole time at Chelsea – from dancing on crutches after winning the Europa League all the way to playing a key role in our Champions League win in 2021.
It’s one of the longest valedictory pieces we’ve seen on the club’s website for a departing player – which may indicate a new direction under the new ownership as well as the affection which everyone at the club has for Rudiger.
Losing him is a bitter blow, both in terms of our team and our dressing room, and we will have to do well to replace him.
