We heard about it on his personal Instagram yesterday, but today Chelsea have announced themselves on their official site that Saul Niguez will be leaving the club.
He was only on loan from Atletico, but there was an option to buy him outright at the end of it for around €40m.
That option has not been taken up, this statement effectively confirms.
It never looked like Chelsea were going to exercise that power, especially after the early struggles Saul had. He had some of the worst first few games we’ve seen by a Blue, and it was enough to make us all feel rather sorry for him.
His form improved through the season, and he ended up with 23 appearances, 12 of them starts. His versatility ended up being very useful when injury struck, and he played at wing back on both sides of the pitch at various points.
Good luck back in Spain, Saul.
