Romelu Lukaku’s attempts to return to Inter looked pretty hopeless not long ago, given the amount Chelsea spent on him a year ago, but with the transfer window only just opening, there’s already significant weight behind the idea that he could go.
Fabrizio Romano has said that it won’t be an easy deal, because Inter can only afford a loan move.

But Nathan Gissing follows up by saying that Chelsea are open to getting rid of him.

The question is how they do it. A loan with no obligation to buy favours Inter – but they can’t commit to an option they can’t afford.
Chelsea don’t want to see their €115m signing playing for another team for free, but equally they don’t want him rotting on their own bench either.
It will be interesting to see what they come up with to solve the issue – and it may well turn out that despite will on both sides to get it done, nothing happens.
