Reports from Spain have been panicking Chelsea fans today, after newly wealthy Newcastle were linked with the Blues’ top defensive target Jules Kounde.
There is talk of a €90m offer that meets the defender’s release clause, and gazumps Chelsea.
But we aren’t worried.
Newcastle signed Dan Burn in January, who was brilliant for them in the second half of the season just gone.
Then there’s Sven Botman, who almost joined in the winter window, and now looks set to come in from Lille this summer, now that their Premier League status is assured and they can start aiming higher.
Of course we can’t entirely rule out the Magpies making a big splash this summer, but given they want to build their team relatively sensibly, we imagine that a partnership of those two will keep them happy next season.
Despite their injection of money, we’re the ones getting deep into the Champions League, and Newcastle are the ones fighting relegation.
