Ethan Ampadu is in a group of players with a very interesting future ahead of him at Chelsea.
He’s not bad enough to be written off, but not good enough to be sure that he will get a first team place next season.
Like many others, he will have to come back and try to shine in preaseason.
He’s just spent a year with Venezia – who were ultimately relegated from Serie A – but he will consider it a success. After some dodgy loans, he found one where he was able to play every week and look good. That at least gives Thomas Tuchel some evidence to go on.
“I have learnt a lot. The expectation was to go there and learn a lot which I felt like I did. Overall, even with it being a negative result as a team, which affects me as well, some of the performances I can take positives from. Every loan has its different challenges, but maybe this is the most positive one,” the Wales international said in quotes picked up by Football.London.
“As a footballer, you want to play in every game, and as a kid, I loved playing every game. It does help on big occasions [playing week in and week out], but week by week, you want to play football. No one likes to sit and watch it.”
The most likely outcome is that he goes on loan again this year, or is sold. But Trevoh Chalobah gives all Chelsea players hope that they can make the breakthrough to the first team if they impress Tuchel in preseason.
