Fabrizio Romano is more known for his exclusive transfer info than his takes on the game itself, but in his column on CaughtOffside this week, he gave some interesting opinions on Raheem Sterling’s potential move to Chelsea.
First he gave some details on the move – Chelsea offered just €25m plus add ons for the winger, whose contract expires next summer. Manchester City are holding out for €55-60m. It seems like a midpoint could be found quite easily.
His take on how Sterling would fit in was very positive:
“I’m sure Sterling can be a much more useful player than Romelu Lukaku for Thomas Tuchel’s ideas,” Romano said.
“Chelsea need a player with these skills and attributes. If the deal happens, I think the England international will adapt well and continue to be a big performer in the Premier League.”
Sterling couldn’t really play in a more different way to Lukaku or have a more different build, so it’s an interesting comparison, but given how much of a flop the Belgian was in Thomas Tuchel’s system, perhaps different is a good thing.
Whether this would mean Chelsea moving to a false 9 system with Kai Havertz and Sterling alternating up top, we will have to see.
