This summer is going to be a very difficult one to predict for Chelsea, as we’re already finding out day by day.
It wasn’t long ago that we thought that Romelu Lukaku’s return to Inter would be financially impossible. Now, it looks positively likely.
That’s to the extent that Football.London are reporting that the striker himself is “confident” he will complete a return to Inter in time for preseason, which is just a month or so away.
That would be impressive progress, but we can see it happening now. Chelsea want him out, Inter want him in, Lukaku wants to go. The finances are tricky, but a loan with a big fee solves a lot of problems and allows Chelsea to kick the can down the line.
As for the time pressure – there’s an important Italian league rule that means the move needs to happen quickly, and that suits Chelsea just fine.
