Romelu Lukau’s Roc Nation connections to new Chelsea owner smoothed deal over

David Ornstein’s piece in The Athletic today reveal some interesting financial details about the loan deal to take Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan, although they were really just establishing for certain the things we already suspected.

A totally fresh point in the article says that “key to the deal” was new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly’s friendship with Michael Yormark, who is president of Roc Nation, the management company who work with Lukaku.

The implication seems to be that Boehly has not played hardball with Inter or Lukaku because that would be bad for his friend. It’s true that it does feel like Chelsea could have pushed for better terms, but equally it’s going to be a disaster no matter what, so there’s something to be said for getting it done now.

What a mess, the sooner we can move on from it on and off the pitch, the better.
