After more than ten years of being owned by a silent spectre of a man who was barely seen in public, let alone quoted, it’s a bizarre turnaround for Chelsea to have their new owner leading from the front, walking around in public and conducting business face to face with other owners and sporting directors.
Ben Jacobs has noted that there is a “clear pattern” in how Boehly and the new owners are operating, with the man himself conducting deals and making sure they happen quickly and in person.
According to Jacobs, “a number of clubs and agents have praised this approach.”
We can already see how effective it’s been simply in how quickly the deals are being done. The Raphinha deal didn’t work out because the Brazilian preferred to join Barcelona, but on our end the deal was done immediately. We found out what Leeds wanted and we offered it. There was no messing around, no haggling and no bad blood.
There are weaknesses to this approach too, but in the position we’re in, speed is vital.
