Billy Gilmour loses out to Ethan Ampadu in battle for training camp minutes

Billy Gilmour has flown away from Chelsea’s training camp in Las Vegas because there are too many players in the group for them to all get minutes, according to Thomas Tuchel.

The Chelsea boss said in quotes picked up by Nizaar Kinsella of the Evening Standard that Gilmour and young striker Harvey Vale, who had basically been training ground dummies until international players were phased in, would now go and join the U23 group on their own preseason.

Gilmour is such a talent, and it wasn’t long ago that there were calls for him to be in the first team regularly.

The manager doesn’t seem to rate him, while Ethan Ampadu has stuck around – albeit perhaps just because he provides cover at centre back.

The Wales international could be a new Trevoh Chalobah, breaking into the team in preseason, or could be the next Gilmour, shipped out once a transfer for another defender is complete.
