Chelsea were “encouraged” to make bids for Frenkie De Jong by Barcelona’s hierarchy in their talks this week, according to Nick Purewal of the Press Association.
He insists that Man U remain favourites, and that Chelsea’s level of interest is unknown, but there’s now definitive truth to the idea that the Catalan club are shopping their number one saleable asset around to the Premier League’s top teams.
The problem, for all the teams involved, is that De Jong doesn’t want to go. He’s made it to Barcelona and is happy there. Why should he give that up just because the club aren’t able to manage their own finances?
If he does agree to go, it’s hard to see him picking Chelsea over a Man U team rebuilding with his old boss Erik Ten Hag in charge. But money talks, and it may be that it’s clear he’s on the market, Thomas Tuchel makes a strong case for signing him.
