Paul Merson can be a bit of a negative nancy and a moaner – especially when it comes to Chelsea.
But in his Sky Sports column today, he’s been forced to say some positive things about the Blues and their rumoured transfer moves we’re making.
On the subject of Cristiano Ronaldo he said the striker “ticks a box” for us after Romelu Lukaku’s departure. As he points out, while Ronaldo is not the player he was, he guarantees goals in a way that few others do in the Premier League.
The former Arsenal man was even more positive about our links to Raheem Sterling – who could sign as soon as this week.
He said the winger would be a “great signing” and a “massive miss” for Man City if they sell him. He added that Chelsea would be getting a “top quality” international footballer, and one who would really make a difference to their chances this season.
It’s nice to have the approval of Merson – but before we get too smug we’re going to have to actually complete some of these deals.
