Chelsea are making swift moves to sign Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.
The defender has long been linked with us, but we hadn’t seem that much to convince us that this was the summer it was finally going to happen – until the last couple of days.
Rumours that he had taken over as number one target after Matthijs De Ligt chose Bayern Munich spread yesterday, and took a huge step forward today with key insiders like Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein all reporting that a move to Stamford Bridge was on the cards.
A look at WhoScored shows why – he was in their team of the season; while De Ligt wasn’t.
Koulibaly is a lot older, but as we were reminded by the signing of Thiago Silva, one or two years of a class player can still work out better than 7 or 8 of an average one. We might well look back in a couple of years and feel relieved that De Ligt chose Germany after all.
