Chelsea were 2-0 down and looking terrible, yet who did Thomas Tuchel turn to from the bench to change things? Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech, two players who he’s clearly not keen on, and who have effectively been for sale all summer (unsurprisingly, there’s been no interest).
The fact that those unwanted players were Tuchel’s best options off the bench just shows what a dire stat this squad is in.
Yes we’ve added some good players this summer in Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella, but they only served to fill the gaps left behind by the departures earlier this year.
If we want to get better than last season, we will have to improve our squad compared to last season. And as it stands, it’s the same, if not slightly worse.
We need a striker, and on today’s evidence, we need a central midfielder too – and that’s just the start.
