Cristoph Freund is a name that meant little to even the most switched on of Chelsea fans even a few weeks ago – but that has changed dramatically.
The Red Bull Salzburg sporting director has had now had a three pronged attack of your newsfeeds. Firstly he’s one of the top candidates to come to Chelsea and take over as a director of football type person here under the new ownership.
Then we were drawn against Salzburg in the Champions League group stage, so Freund was among the delegation here on Wednesday night to watch us draw 1-1 with the Austrians.

Now there’s a third link, as reported by Ben Jacobs. He says that the conversation between Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and Freund began back in August as the club pushed to sign Benjamin Sesko.
That deal didn’t happen in the end – but given Chelsea’s ongoing need for a striker, we can only imagine it will be revisited next summer, especially if Freund is by then a Chelsea employee.
