Cristoph Freund refuses to rule out Chelsea move

RB Salzburg were in town to face Chelsea yesterday, so it was no surprise to see their sporting director Cristoph Freund at Stamford Bridge.

But there is another string to this story. Chelsea have been heavily linked with interest in the German as the key man to come in and take over their footballing operation, and Freund hasn’t done much to dispel that with his latest, quotes, as featured in the Daily Mail.

In fact, he very much inflamed the news with his comments:

“You should never rule anything out in football and Chelsea are such a huge club. But I’m sports director in Salzburg and I really enjoy it,” he said in response to questions about the rumours.

“Chelsea is a huge club in transition. I can’t say exactly what will happen in the next few weeks and months.”

Everything is pointing to this all being wrapped up pretty soon, and the fact he was in London – while a coincidence – might have sped things up slightly.

He’s done a great job in Salzburg, although given the success of the Red Bull project overall it’s always slightly difficult to separate one aspect of their success from another.
