Kepa Arrizabalaga seemed closed than ever to a move away from Chelsea this summer, but in the end he stayed, and last night he started his first game of the season.
In quotes on famous Spanish radio show El Larguero, the keeper admitted that there had been serious interest, but insisted he was happy to stay put in the end.
“There were things but the club always had their faith in me,” the stopper was quoted as saying.
“They always wanted me to be part of their squad.
“We analysed the situation and I am happy to stay and be at this club.”
Edouard Mendy is badly out of form, and with a new manager in place, this is surely Kepa’s big chance to break out again and establish himself as first choice.
Some fans will be too scarred to ever have faith in him, but he’s got at least one more season in which he can prove that he’s the player we thought we were buying.
He will be feeling thankful now that he didn’t take the chances to leave that were presented to him.
