Chelsea had had significant contact with Brighton this summer long before they swooped for their manager.
Graham Potter was just the latest to move between the two clubs, following the big money purchase Marc Cucurella to Chelsea, Billy Gilmour’s move the other way, and the loan of Levi Colwill to Brighton for the rest of the season.
Cucurella’s situation won’t change – in fact he is likely to only benefit from having a manager who knows him coming in. But Colwill and Gilmour are slightly in limbo now.
Both were brought in because they had presumably been convinced that they would have good game time under Potter. Now they have no idea who the new coach will be, and whether they will be favoured by the new man.
Gilmour had a disastrous loan last season which really set his career back, while Colwill had a great one he will want to build on. Now nobody knows what comes next.
