Chelsea’s team for tonight’s match against AC Milan has been released, and it gives further insight into Graham Potter’s long term thinking.
The coach has picked 5 teams now, and we’re starting to develop a picture of his intentions.
Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella were expected to play in the same team quite often, but so far Potter has been rotating them one for the other. It seems like it will be a pretty regular 1-2 swap down that left flank for this season, with Kalidou Koulibaly at left centre back.
Equally the midfield pair of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic looks like it will be Potter’s go-to formation with N’Golo Kante out, as it has been for so many of our recent coaches. Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been great, but he will have to accept that in tough European away games like this, Potter likes the control and experience of the Jovacic pivot.
Up front, Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang is clearly first choice ahead of Armando Broja, and the young Albania international will have to do a lot to usurp the experienced forward.
