Chelsea close in on another domestic target as sporting director

Chelsea’s hunt for a sporting director is coming closer and closer to home.

After trying their luck with a few big European names, the last two suggestions have been decided domestic. Joe Shields, Southampton’s director of youth recruitment, is considering an offer from the Blues, meanwhile there’s also been a bid for the services of Stuart Webber.

Webber has been a big part of Norwich City’s return to life as a Premier League yo-yo club, having previously used smart European buys to help Huddersfield Town into the top flight.

Both of those jobs required mixing young English talents with underrated gems from other leagues, and his role at Chelsea would certainly be a step up from that. Budgets – and expectations – would be bigger, and he would be taking on the biggest clubs and the toughest agents in search of A+ standard talent.

But if he’s up for the challenge, we’re excited to see how he would get on.
