Graham Potter on “vital” academy players and their role this season

After years of neglect, recent seasons have seen Chelsea finally starting to use their academy players more and more.

Against AC Milan on Wednesday night, the Blues had 6 players from Cobham involved at carious points, and today there were plenty of familiar faces once again.

At full time after a convincing win, Graham Potter was asked about the importance of these academy players, and he didn’t hold back in his praise of the quality of youth product he had at his disposal, and the advantages of having them ready made for the pressures of Chelsea.

Reece James, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher, Armando Broja and Mason Mount all featured for the Blues today, and all look set to make lots of appearances this season.

This is not just about getting them into the first team, it’s about backing up quality signings from elsewhere with home grown squad players to create a sustainable business.
