Today’s Chelsea piece in the Athletic from Simon Johnson is all about Marc Cucurella.
The left back was signed this summer, but had his lowest moment for Chelsea against his former club yesterday. He was subbed off, not for the first time this season, and looked pretty upset on the bench.
The Brighton fans were on his back all game, and the Chelsea fans are increasingly unhappy about his performances.
But he has a lot of backing – he played for his current manager at Brighton, so Graham Potter has seen him at his best. The piece says that Potter has communicated privately that the Catalan has his full support.
Publicly, the manager has admitted his player is “a little bit up and down,” but backed him to succeed.
It’s also noted that Cucurella has had a bad illness in recent weeks that’s taken his edge off.
Either way, Ben Chilwell and Kalidou Koulibaly are likely to be our first choice left side for a while now.
