“Process of pain” – Graham Potter compares his Brighton three years ago to current situation

Graham Potter has been speaking about the process of pain that Chelsea will have to go through on occasions, after being thrashed 4-1 by his former club at the weekend.

Things had been going very well for Potter at Chelsea, and he was unbeaten before this game. Although things had been shaky at times, it has been looking like we have been seeing many positives from the Potter transition.

The Brighton loss was a real hit in the face and had many fans asking many questions, naturally. Potter spoke about the game afterwards, but since then, further seemingly embargoed quotes have come out, where he speaks further about the current situation at Chelsea, and how they will have these tough times as well.

Potter says that the line of progression will never go straight up, that is impossible. And he compares his time at Brighton from three years ago, to where they are now to reiterate this.

“It’s a case of analysing the game, being calm, being fair,” Potter said as reported by The Evening Standard. “It’s not about the players necessarily. It’s about all of us, it’s collective, including myself. How we can do better.

“It’s not a disgrace to lose here [at Brighton]. You can see that the opponent was very motivated. And they have got some really good players, with quality. We got off to a really bad start.

“But you have to have that sometimes if you want to make progress. If you think that the line is going to go straight up, it’s impossible.

“That team you saw out there for Brighton wasn’t the team that was there three years ago. There is a process of pain that you have to go through and you have to keep trying to improve.

“Unless there is another way. Whenever you are trying to learn or master something, get better, you need to sometimes have a step back, have a bad spell or suffer to grow and get better.”

  1. The coach is here to learn. And too bad Chelsea is a bigger club than learning or growing coaches experiments…too bad the hard work of the former players and coaches and management is enough to steer the club higher than this mess…a world club cup holder..no no no.. unacceptable
