One position that has remained unchanged through Graham Potter’s first 3 games in charge of Chelsea is in goal.
The new boss picked Kepa Arrizabalaga to face RB Salzburg in the Champions League with it later emerging that the Senegal international had an injury. Kepa has kept his place in the two games since, and it seems likely that he plays again later today.
In his column for CaughtOffside, Stan Collymore hailed Potter’s decision to give Kepa a chance.
“Kepa is a player who is benefiting from Potter’s arrival,” the former midfielder said.
“He’s started in Chelsea’s last three matches and he’s playing well. This is another great decision from Potter. He’s come in and said ‘look lads, I am here now, so everyone has a clean slate – impress me.’”
We’re not quite as convinced as Collymore that this is all Potter’s doing. We genuinely believe that Mendy picked up an injury, and while Potter can be given the credit of not switching back to the former first choice the moment he was fit, it’s not like he made the brave call to drop him out of nowhere.
It will be interesting to see whether Kepa keeps the gloves now, with his rival back fit.
