Mason Mount was given the man of the match award yesterday – although he wasn’t sure he deserved it.
The modest midfielder revealed in quotes after the game that his teammates had been on his back in recent weeks as he picked up award after award, with them cheekily claiming that he didn’t deserve them.
Well, in this case he agrees. Speaking after the 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb, the academy product confessed “I don’t think I deserve it” while gazing down at his latest shiny bauble.
We have to admit that we weren’t expecting him to win it – it was a team effort and in those games the award usually goes to a goalscorer.

He said he thought he had given the ball away too much, and mentioned his teammate Denis Zakaria, who came into the team for his debut, played really well and scored the winning goal.
“He deserves man of the match more than me,” Mount added.
He’s probably right, although you won’t catch up complaining about Mount picking up awards – he’s always a worthy recipient in our eyes.
