Chelsea “insisting” on midfielder and now just need president’s sign-off

Roll up, roll up! It’s time for your thrice daily Enzo Fernandez update.

Your evening edition comes courtesy of Fabrizio Romano, who claims Chelsea have been “insisting” today, working on a deal with Benfica. Personal terms are now agreed with the player, and it’s apparently just a question of persuading Benfica president Rui Costa to accept the structure of deal on the table.

While he doesn’t say anything has changed, it effectively shoots down the whispers from earlier this afternoon that a deal was done already.

We think Costa will eventually realise he has little choice but to accept. It’s all the money he could have wanted, and while he would be keen to keep the midfielder for the rest of the season at least given how well the team are doing, an unhappy player can do more harm than good, even if they’re as good as Enzo.

Tomorrow could be the day we finally get the green light.
