(Opinion): Benfica still control Enzo Fernandez future – but you wouldn’t know it from listening to their manager

Benfica head coach Roger Schmidt has conducted his latest press conference this afternoon ahead of Benfica’s match tomorrow.

As we know, Chelsea are in active dialogue with Benfica over Enzo Fernandez and some of Schmidt’s comments are very interesting in my opinion.

“I think we always have to prepare everything in the background, especially at the end of the window, especially when you are not in the driver seat” this to me was very interesting because you could interpret this as to they are already looking at potential replacements and furthermore, how are Benfica not in the driver seat? They are the selling club so, it is a bit strange in my view that their coach does not think they hold the position of power.

Schmidt referred to football as “business” which to me suggests that there is a certain price that would make financial sense for them to sell. Of course, 120 million euros on paper sounds fantastic, but until you find out the instalments and payment plan, nothing can be certain whether Chelsea have offered a good deal or not.

Roger Schmidt did not sound as confident overall of keeping Enzo as he did a few weeks ago but did once again refer to the release clause in the player’s contract, saying there is “nothing they can do” if it is triggered but of course Chelsea don’t want to go down that road for financial reasons.
