Chelsea’s spending spree since the takeover of Todd Boehly’s consortium last summer has been a hot topic, Football outlet The Athletic took to Youtube to try and give more detail as to why and how Chelsea are spending as much as they are..
Some of the detail includes explaining how the club spreading the payments over the length of long contracts allows them to be more flexible with spending, David Ornstein said that “the risk is why more teams don’t do it” for those wondering, the risk with contracts longer than 5 years is that if the player does not do well, Chelsea would be stuck with that player on a huge contract with dedicated payments still having to be paid. Take Kepa for example, he signed a seven year contract at Chelsea and the club failed to sell him several times due to his long contract and underperformance.
The difference with Todd Boehly is that he is offering relatively low base wages with the opportunity for extra payments based on performance.
